Mouth ulcers or ‘Canker sores’ as they are called are small and painful sores that develop inside your mouth. The lesions are whitish-yellow with red borders. These ulcers appear on the upper lip, cheeks, gums, tongue or the palate. Generally, self healing, these ulcers do not leave behind a scar. However, since they are painful, you can try some effective home remedies to soothe the discomfort.
- Salt water rinses
- Coconut oil
- Turmeric powder
- Apple cider vinegar
- Baking soda rinse
- Milk of magnesia
You can also keep an ice cube on the ulcer and allow it to dissolve. Over the counter numbing ointments or gels can help reduce the discomfort and assist with severe ulcers. Anti bacterial mouth washes can be beneficial in faster healing. If the ulcers recur after 7-14 days, then see your dentist.
Avoid doing these though……..
- Eating acidic, hot and spicy foods
- Brushing using a hard bristled brush
- Chewing on your inner lips and cheeks
Vitamin B complex and vitamin C can be of some use in reducing the occurrence of mouth ulcers. Stress and poor oral hygiene can lead to mouth ulcers. Practicing good oral hygiene habits, living a stress free lifestyle with balanced diet are helpful in reducing the occurrence of mouth ulcers.
