Tooth decay/ cavities/ tooth caries
Tooth decay also known as tooth cavity or tooth caries is a disease of the hard structures of the tooth. Cavity is caused by the acids produced by the bacteria in the mouth. S mutans is the main culprit in tooth decay. The sugar rich food that remains on the tooth causes the bacteria to multiply and thrive. The decay process first begins in the enamel and proceeds to the dentin and then to the pulp. When the bacterial activity reaches the pulp, the first signs of tooth pain appear.
